Casket of the month

Windwillow. Otago.

Coffins are made from young willow wands grown in Kakanui,North Otago.
Willow is harvested in winter and stored for 12 months before it is ready for weaving. The making of each coffin takes up to 10 days.
The techniques used are traditional....the art of basket weaving predates pottery.
The hand-tools used are the same that have been used for centuries... this ancient craft has never been mechanised.
Sizes range from infant to large male adult...any sized person can be catered for.
The coffins are sturdy and natural...no dyes or stains...all colours depend on the natural bark colour of the 6 varieties of basket willow grown. They readily break down in the soil.

The Natural Casket standard

The Natural Burials organisation has a well-established standard for "natural caskets". We developed the standard so people could have confidence that caskets they wish to buy meet with our approval for their low environmental impact.

Caskets meeting our standard are certified for use in our natural cemeteries because they decompose speedily and naturally, and are constructed from natural components with minimal manufacturing footprint.

Caskets meeting the standard are ideal for all other types of funerals, including cremations, because of their low or zero use of chemical glues, veneers, and synthetic fixings.

The standard is open and clear. It has been developed based on experience and comprehensive research. The intention is to keep it simple, plain and achievable. Not all caskets will pass the standard. As a rule of thumb, the more processed components and manufacturing involved in the casket, the less likely it will be approved. We do not charge for certification.

Ask for the approved caskets below at our certified funeral directors. If you order through us, some manufacturers and funeral directors make a small donation to our organisation. So we encourage you to order by calling us on 0800 525 500.
